Starting October 1, 2024 there will be significant changes to laws regarding DUI's. Maryland Governor Wes Moore will close that loophole. The governor will sign into law HB 105. This will no longer allow first-time drunk driving offenders with probation to avoid the ignition interlock requirement in their vehicles.
Last year, more than half of the 10,161 DUI offenders in Maryland received Probation Before Judgement.
Drunk driving deaths in Maryland jumped 24% from 2019 to 2022, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
Closing the loophole means that these first-time offenders will now be required to complete 180 days on an ignition interlock device.
